Webs and Woe¶
The situation deteriorated quickly within the abandoned mining facility. What began as a controlled demolition of the asteroid spiders’ nest devolved into chaos when Stigs and Gwen found themselves ensnared in sticky, phosphorescent webbing. The spiders emerged from crevices in the rock walls, their chitinous legs making a sickening clicking sound as they advanced. Multiple sets of gleaming eyes reflected our lantern light as they dragged our companions toward their waiting mandibles, which dripped with paralyzing venom.
The battle that followed pushed us to our limits. These creatures struck with surprising force, their fangs capable of piercing even Stigs’ tough hide. Ryalith, typically reserved and calculating, unleashed a flurry of precise strikes with newfound ferocity, targeting the creatures’ vulnerable underbellies. Gloopwing’s strange crystal pulsed with increasing intensity throughout the encounter, seemingly resonating with her heightened emotions.
Despite several harrowing moments – including Gwen nearly being cocooned completely – we emerged victorious. The last spider collapsed with a shuddering hiss, its legs curling inward as it died. In the eerie silence that followed, we discovered the spiders’ hoard – a considerable cache of unrefined gems worth approximately 5000 gold pieces, a floating cart of Haemish design, and several magical items that had likely belonged to previous unfortunate visitors.
Most notable among these treasures were a pair of finely crafted gauntlets that Gwenzahlya claimed. Upon donning them, she felt a surge of strength course through her arms – Gauntlets of Ogre Power, capable of bestowing the strength of those brutish creatures upon their wearer. We also recovered a Periapt of Health and a Potion of Fire Giant Strength, adding to our growing collection of arcane items.
Reflections in the Void¶
The remainder of our journey to Andromea provided a rare moment of calm. As our ship cut through the void between worlds, we gathered in the common area and, for perhaps the first time since our paths crossed, spoke openly about our motivations for this quest.
Gwen’s shadow seemed to darken and shrink as she hesitantly revealed portions of her history, careful to maintain certain mysteries but sharing enough to explain her interest in the Via Astra pieces. Gloopwing cradled her crystal – which we now understand may be a draegon heart, though how she came to possess such a thing remains unclear – and spoke of finding purpose beyond mere survival.
Ryalith, typically guarded, offered glimpses into her own objectives. Her search for knowledge and power has specific aims, though she keeps her ultimate goals close. Stigs, despite his gruff exterior, revealed surprising depth in his desire to find meaning in his second chance at life.
This conversation proved invaluable, helping us better understand the tangled web of lore surrounding the Via Astra artifacts and our individual connections to them. Though we each have our separate motivations, it became clear that our paths have converged for reasons beyond mere coincidence.
The Markets and Mysteries of Khazun¶
Andromea greeted us with swirling sands and a relentless sun. The city of Khazun rose from the desert like a mirage – a sprawling collection of sandstone structures, domed temples, and bustling marketplaces. Upon arrival, we decided to split our forces to maximize efficiency.
Ryalith and Stigs ventured into the heart of the city to gather information on the Great Houses of Khazun, particularly seeking connections to clan Mesho’a and their interest in Cynedicia. Meanwhile, Gloopwing, Eko, and Gwen made their way to the gem merchants’ quarter, hoping to convert our newly acquired treasures into more portable currency.
Ryalith and Gloopwing’s information-gathering expedition yielded subtle but valuable results. Through careful conversation and strategic questions, they pieced together more details about clan Mesho’a’s unusual interest in the ancient ziggurat. Whispers of an ancestral connection to the stars themselves – not metaphorical, but literal – circulated among those knowledgeable about the clan’s history. More concerning were murmurs that Talah Mesho’a viewed the Via Astra artifacts not as treasures to be recovered, but as chains to be broken, and her destiny as leading her people to the wider universe.
